UPPER GALLIAH ROAD HOUSE

Due to its location on the edge of Derry, the site is in a very rural area defined mainly by remote Irish vernacular homes and agricultural buildings.

The design of this home was carefully considered due to its context. The form taking inspiration from the surrounding built environment is simple in nature with a rectilinear plan, contrasts against a modern play on the traditional farm yard barn with a front ended gable clad in a striking geometric burnt timber cladding

The separation of the ground and first floor through materiality creates a human scale. The two distinctive blocks are a mixture of burnt larch at first floor level and contrasting white render plinth to suggest an element of weightlessness.

Recessed balconies offer unrestricted views to the surrounding landscape from upper level living accommodation. The playful interaction with materiality, along with the diverse architectural / agricultural mix provides a contemporary, yet traditional, architecture.
